Why Is My Tile Grout Cracking in a Las Vegas Home?
Grout is not glue. If it keeps cracking, something underneath is moving.
Grout is a filler. It is not an adhesive and it has almost no strength in tension, which means it cannot hold anything together and it cannot bridge a joint that is moving. When grout cracks, it is reporting movement rather than failing on its own.
That matters because the instinctive response, which is to rake it out and regrout, treats the report rather than the cause. If nothing else changes, the same line cracks again, usually within a year, and homeowners reasonably conclude the tiler did a poor job.
Six causes, roughly in order of how often we find them
Missing movement joints
Tile expands and contracts. A large floor needs soft joints, filled with caulk rather than grout, at the perimeter and at intervals across the field. Boom-era installations frequently have none, and the tile relieves that stress by cracking the weakest line it can find.
Grout where caulk belongs
Any change of plane should be caulked, never grouted. Wall to floor, inside corners, around a tub, where a counter meets a backsplash. Those joints move by design. Grout in them cracks every time, and it is the single most common thing we see.
Slab movement
The valley’s soil moves, and a slab that flexes takes the tile with it. A crack that runs in a straight line across a room, sometimes through the tile rather than the grout, usually traces a crack in the concrete below.
Deflection in the subfloor
Less common here since most homes are slab-on-grade, but real on second floors and in the rare basement. Tile needs a stiff substrate. If the floor bounces underfoot, the grout will tell you.
Tile laid straight to concrete
Without an uncoupling membrane between slab and tile, any movement in the slab is transmitted directly into the tile. On a new installation over an existing slab this is the difference between a floor that lasts and one that cracks in year two.
Wrong grout for the joint
Sanded, unsanded and epoxy grouts are for different joint widths and different jobs. Using unsanded grout in a wide joint is a reliable way to get shrinkage cracking regardless of what the floor is doing.
The hard water complication
Las Vegas water is very hard, and that shows up in grout more than people expect. Mineral deposits build in the joint, and the cleaning products people reach for to remove them are frequently acidic. Repeated acidic cleaning erodes cementitious grout, which makes the joint porous, which makes it stain faster, which invites more aggressive cleaning.
By the time a homeowner describes grout as crumbling, a fair proportion of the time it has been cleaned to death rather than cracked. The fix in that case is not structural at all. It is regrouting with a sealed or epoxy product and changing what goes on it.
How we approach a re-do
If the cause is cosmetic, meaning eroded or stained grout with no movement behind it, we rake out and regrout, seal it, and tell you what to clean it with.
If the cause is movement, regrouting alone is a waste of your money. The honest answer is that the affected area comes up, we look at what is under it, and it goes back down with an uncoupling membrane and properly placed soft joints. That is a bigger job and we would rather say so than take payment for a repair we expect to fail.

Can I just regrout the cracked line?
You can, and if the cause was erosion it will hold. If the cause was movement, expect the same line to open again within a year. The test is whether it has cracked before in the same place.
Why does the grout crack where the floor meets the wall?
Because that joint should not have grout in it. Perimeter joints and inside corners are movement joints and belong to caulk. This is the most common installation error we find.
Does cracked grout mean water is getting through?
On a floor, usually not much, though it will over time. In a shower it matters far more, because grout was never the waterproofing. If a shower is involved, treat it as urgent rather than cosmetic.
Is cracked grout a sign of foundation problems?
Sometimes, and the giveaway is a crack that runs dead straight across a room and continues through tiles rather than following joints. Look for whether doors nearby have started sticking or walls have cracked in the same area.
What should I clean grout with here?
Something pH neutral. Acidic cleaners cut through hard-water deposits quickly and erode cementitious grout while they do it. Sealing the grout after regrouting makes the routine far easier.
Is epoxy grout worth it?
In wet areas and in kitchens, often yes. It resists staining and hard water far better and does not need sealing. It costs more to install because it is less forgiving to work with, and it is not a substitute for movement joints.
